It has been suggested to the Governor, if the Colony were to give up the present Civil Hospital to be used as a Lock Hospital and if Her Majesty's Government would repair it for that purpose, and provide quarters for the visiting Surgeon, and also allow the Colony an amount equivalent to the value of the ground estimated at present at $20,000, this Government might then undertake the purchase of the proposed site and the erections of a suitable Civil Hospital, with residence for the Surgeon, all which would probably cost about $86,000.
Such are the particulars of the proposal.
47. Accordant with the above, less the amount repaid by Her Majesty's Government for the lot on which the Lock Hospital and present Civil Hospital now stand.
The Colony might thereby, from the revenue raised by Licenses and Taxes in connection with the Brothel, aided by contribution from the General Revenue, find means to maintain the increased medical staff required by the new Ordinance, whilst the capital necessary for purchase of site and erection of Buildings might be derived from the Licenses about to be issued for a limited number of legalized gambling Houses.
